Safety Education Pilot
Program enters second phase

SAFETY EDUCATION PROGRAM MOVES TO SOUTHEAST CORRIDOR

The METRO Solutions Community and School Safety Education Pilot Program entered its second phase by moving to Peck Elementary in the Southeast Corridor.  The pilot program began in February at Roosevelt Elementary in the North Corridor, where it has now concluded.

Karen Franklin, better known as Miss METRO as students now call her, is a former teacher and school principal and currently a METRO-certified Small Business owner carrying out the pilot program in English and Spanish on behalf of METRO Solutions.  She will present students with interactive safety lessons for three weeks, as she did at Roosevelt Elementary in February.

The curriculum fits the learning and testing objectives of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), as well as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Content focuses on safety around construction, rail, pedestrians and vehicles.

The pilot program includes a field trip to METRO's Rail Operations Center and is designed to include parents through home activities.  Upon completion of the program, participating students receive a METRO certificate of participation along with a reminder to practice safe habits when they're around construction or trains.

In partnership with the Houston Independent School District, similar training is available to staff and community groups.  After the pilot program concludes, it will be implemented in schools along all of the light-rail corridors.
