Community School Safety Education Program (CSSEP)

Description

During the spring semester of 2008, the CSSEP pilot program was implemented in the North, East End, and Southeast Corridors. More than 1500 students engaged in an innovative and exciting learning experience that focused on safety.

Over a three-week period, students visited the METRO Solutions School Safety classroom to participate in lessons on train awareness, construction and rail safety. The activities are age-appropriate, fun, interactive, hands-on and meaningful.

The instructional strategies meet the needs of Houston's diverse population, and the learning objectives are aligned to the TEKS and TAKS. Bilingual lessons integrate academic subject areas such as science, math, language arts, social studies, health, safety, music and movement.

Beginning in the fall of 2008, METRO will begin implementing the safety program in K-12 HISD schools located along the corridor alignments.
