Public Art milestone successfully achieved

The METRO Solutions Public Art Program Call to Artists is complete and the response has been impressive.  Public Art Manager Sara Kellner reports that 262 artists submitted their works by the November 30 deadline.  Each of these artists has applied for an opportunity to work with design teams on rapid transit stations and other facilities.  "The fact that 108 artists in Houston applied to be a Team Artist for the METRO Public Art Program is a testament to strong interest in the program," said Kellner.  "It also represents the communities' understanding of METRO's commitment to public art," she said.

Next steps for the Public Art Program

Community Visioning.jpgAs you may recall, METRO held a series of Community Visioning Workshops, which helped to create Community Visioning Committees for the North, East End, and Southeast corridors.  During December, these committees will continue to meet and refine their work.  In addition, Uptown Corridor Stakeholder Representative Donna Lane will continue seeking community input.  She has been canvassing the Uptown/Galleria area asking residents and businesses to submit their ideas.  This way of brainstorming seems to appeal to stakeholders who may not be part of an "official" committee, but still want to participate.  If this appeals to you, please contact your Stakeholder Representative.  Since the University Corridor is at an earlier stage of the planning process, community visioning work is pending further route refinement.

As for the artists, later this month METRO will be announcing the 40 finalists who will be invited to submit formal proposals for station / facility artwork.  You will be able to see their proposals and comment on them between January 30 and February 4, 2007.  Then, by mid February, METRO will announce the 25 - 30 artists selected.

FAQ's for Uptown Corridor

Since March, we have slowly been including Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) for each of the METRO Solutions transit corridors.  Today we are adding the fifth one: Uptown Corridor.  Stakeholders in each corridor have helped us craft and add to these FAQ's, so if you have further questions or concerns regarding the Uptown Corridor, please contact Stakeholder Representative Donna Lane.
