About North Corridor

Description

The North Corridor is approximately 5.2 miles long and extends from the existing METRORail University of Houston-Downtown Station. The alignment continues north on the Main Street Bridge and passes under I-10 and continues on an aerial structure passing over the Union Pacific Railroad at the proposed Intermodal Terminal. The aerial structure comes down to grade south of Hogan Street, continues at-grade in the median of Main Street, turns east onto Boundary Street and then turns north onto Fulton Street. The alignment continues at-grade in the median of Fulton and then passes under I-610. North of I-610 the corridor continues on an aerial structure north of Melbourne Street and crosses the Houston Belt and Terminal Railway. The aerial structure comes down to grade into the median of Fulton Street south of Dorchester Avenue, and terminates adjacent to the existing Northline Transit Center. The locally preferred alignment is shown in the right column.

The North Corridor includes eight stations along the alignment that will consist of a combination of split side and center platforms. The stations will be equipped with passenger information and fare collection systems.

In addition to downtown Houston, the corridor includes several established residential neighborhoods such as the Near Northside, North Central, Silverdale, Ryon, Lindale Park, North Lindale, and Melrose.

Land use within the Near Northside community between University of Houston-Downtown Station and Boundary Street include Hardy Yard, industrial properties, small neighborhood commerce and community facilities, single family and multi-family homes, James L. Ketelsen Elementary School, and scattered, small vacant lots. The Hardy Yard is being considered for a major redevelopment effort, though some railroad use is expected to continue through the site.

Along Fulton Street, land use is a mix of residential and commercial properties including Moody Park, Hollywood Cemetery, Holy Cross Cemetery, Clemente Martinez Elementary School, and Irvington Village, a public housing project undergoing a major renovation program. Land uses in the Northside/Northline community include single-family homes, small neighborhood commercial centers and establishments, and community facilities. Northline Mall is a major retail center for the community.
